How much water do you really need to drink?

It is true that the majority of people in the UK do not drink enough water. However the idea that we should drink 2.5 litres a day is a slight over-simplification.

It has even been suggested that a mineral water company took a selected paragraph from an American study, which first mentioned this recommended amount and used it in a marketing campaign but omitted to explain that the study concluded that this was the total amount of fluid including that from food.

The British Dietetic Association still agrees with the studies findings. However they go on to advise that 1.8 litres (6-8 glasses a day-more in hot weather and during or after exercise) should come from beverages. Plain water is best but fruit juices, milk, tea and coffee can count and the remainder from food.
